A Fallen Apple is the 283rd chapter of the Skip Beat! Manga Series. This is the third and last instalment of three chapters that have preceded under the same title.
Plot[]
Ren gifts Kyoko the necklace he always wears, asking her to look after it for him. In return Kyoko also gives Ren a precious keepsake.
Summary[]
Ren places the necklace he always wears onto Kyoko's neck causing her to look at in surprise. Ren asks if she can look after it for him. He admits he actually made it by hand as part of the Ren Tsuruga brand as a symbol of his determination and also a good luck charm. Kyoko is overwhelmed by the responsibility and tries to give it back much to Ren's bemusement. Doesn't she realise he is confiding some of his deepest feelings to her and yet she is still not moved? She refuses to take the necklace twice too. Ren wonders if he may be mistaken about her feelings? Ren tells her not to think to hard on the meaning of the necklace as it really just a necklace, it was something the President had him make. For his new image. So it wasn't like he made it with any great feeling or sentiment behind it. Kyoko stammers that he overcome so many hurdles and sad times with it though... it's basically his other half is it not? Ren hums at this with a resigned expression, probably knowing he's going have to tell Kyoko that it really is not that special to him. Kyoko meanwhile muses that to her its been an emotional support since she was a child, almost like Corn himself. This causes her to have an epiphany and gasp out loud, causing Ren to look at her in shock. Kyoko then instantly offers Corn the Stone to him, she reasons that since he is giving her half of himself then she should give half of herself. Ren stares at the stone, nonplus. Kyoko inquires if he remembers it? Ren assures he does, he just was wondering if Corn would hate him if he held onto this. Kyoko insists he would never, Corn's a really nice person and would treat them as he treats her. Ren gives her an arched look, is she sure? Kyoko opens her mouth to rebut but then remembers Corn's words from Guam about how Ren's got a lot of nerve for extracting a chastity promise from her when they aren't even an official couple[1] and pauses. Kyoko slowly closes her mouth and looks down, losing her confidence in her argument. Ren laughs at the pause but thinks it will be fine. Corn actually fits really well in his hand. They will get along just fine. Kyoko beams at him once hearing this. Ren responds with a soft smile.
There's a knock on Ren's dressing room door, asking if he can come on over now. Ren tells them he'll be over soon. Kyoko makes to leave as well. Outside the dressing room Ren calls to her. As they part ways Ren can't help but fluster Kyoko once more by telling her to keep the necklace close in its proper place as he gestures to the centre of his chest, at all times, and places. Kyoko blushes hard as she stammers out that she will do her utmost to do so. Ren confirms he will do the same for his own as he holds Corn in his palm, in sickness or in health he will keep it with him always. Ren then gives Kyoko a fond smile. Kyoko collapses into a foetal position against the wall as she blushes so hard with embarrassment, all the while cursing Ren and his playboy ways. She worries again that maybe he's playing with her but then she recalls his words from before that 'he'd never make a joke like that with her[2]'. Kyoko then wails internally why did he have to say it like that?! A flashback to Ren answers that, even if he was joking she'd never get it[2]. Kyoko angrily shoves flashback Ren away as she rages through her embarrassment.
Meanwhile Ren walks off holding onto the stone, his expression set and determined. In the background the T.V. is still playing the awards show, with the announcer still discussing Cedric D. Bennett's appearance and live music show. Ren's hold on the stone tightens.
